York Food Festival’s Environmental Impact Reduction Initiatives

At York Food Festival, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and promoting sustainability. Our efforts this year encompass several innovative initiatives designed to minimize waste, reduce carbon emissions, and support local producers.

One of the standout features of the festival is our introduction of deposit-based returnable plastic “glasses” at the festival bars. This initiative aims to significantly cut down on single-use plastic waste, encouraging attendees to return their glasses for reuse throughout the event.

To further enhance our waste management, we are providing mixed dry recycling and glass recycling facilities for all stand-holders. This ensures that a substantial portion of the waste generated during the festival is recycled appropriately, reducing our overall landfill contribution.

Our selection of local stands is a key aspect of our commitment to sustainability. By promoting and supporting local food producers, we not only offer festival-goers the best of Yorkshire’s culinary delights but also reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods from afar. Additionally, we use biodiesel for our generators, which is a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

Transporting materials around the city center is also being handled in an eco-friendly manner. We are employ a handcarts, minimizing the need for motorized vehicles and reducing emissions.

Moreover, we have invested in gazebos that are stored locally, eliminating transportation costs and further reducing our carbon footprint. This investment not only supports our sustainability goals but also ensures that we have reliable, reusable infrastructure for future festivals.

In line with our commitment to promoting sustainable transportation, we have ensured that access to the cycle racking in Parliament Street is maintained throughout the festival. This encourages both visitors and participants to use bicycles, further reducing the festival’s environmental impact.
